Periodontal Treatment Periodontal Surgery by Dr. Sam Naim in Encino, CA
Non Surgical Periodontal Therapy
Periodontal Health is often accomplished through nonsurgical periodontal treatment, including scaling and root planing (a careful cleaning of the root surfaces to remove plaque and calculus or tartar from deep periodontal pockets and to smooth the tooth root to remove bacterial toxins). Most Periodontists would agree that after scaling and root planing, many patients do not require any further active treatment, including surgical therapy. However, the majority of patients will require ongoing maintenance therapy to sustain health. Nonsurgical therapy does have its limitations, and when it does not achieve periodontal health, surgery may be indicated to restore periodontal anatomy damaged by periodontal diseases and to facilitate oral hygiene practices.
Periodontal Surgery
If you are diagnosed with Periodontal Disease, Dr. Naim may recommend periodontal surgery. Periodontal surgery is necessary when your periodontist determines that the tissue around your teeth is unhealthy and cannot be repaired with nonsurgical treatment. The following are the four types of surgical treatment most commonly prescribed:

Extractions
When a tooth can not be saved with periodontal treatment, Dr. Naim will advise to have a Dental Extraction or removal of the tooth. Nowadays, teeth are extracted with minimal trauma to the jawbone for future Dental Implant placement. Often, you may be a candidate to have a Dental Implant placed at the same time as tooth extraction. Dr. Naim will let you know if any teeth need to be extracted and all of your tooth replacement options.
